A hike to the Black Lake in the Granitz is not just a journey through nature but also an adventure into the world of legends. The trail begins in Sellin, just before the pier, and follows the Hochuferweg toward Binz, winding through a forest that adds to the mysterious atmosphere of the tale.
According to legend, a prince once returned from a hunt only to find that his castle had vanished, replaced by a dark lake. A chair with his noble gloves floated on the water, but as he reached for the gloves, the chair sank, and the prince was punished – transformed into an old, gnarled oak, which still stands on the shore today.
If you listen closely, some say you can hear joyful voices rising from the depths of the lake. And legend has it that if the castle’s towers ever reappear above the water, a brave visitor could break the curse and set it free. But as we carefully step onto the wooden pier and gaze into the inky black water, all we see are water lilies – or was that a faint song in the distance?
